Where are palm fruit grown?
Palms can only be grown in the tropical regions of Asia, Africa and South America. Global demand for edible vegetable oils has grown dramatically in recent decades and palm oil production has rapidly expanded to meet this demand.
From the 1990s to the present, the area under palm oil cultivation has increased by 43%. There are currently 17 countries producing palm oil, and Malaysia and Indonesia account for 85% of the world’s palm oil production, where 4.5 million people make a living from palm oil.

About a quarter of global palm oil production is used domestically and three quarters are exported. Asia, the European Union and Africa are major importers of palm oil.
