What is Sustainable Palm Oil?
Sustainable palm oil is an approach to oil palm agriculture that aims to produce palm oil without causing deforestation or harming people.
Sustainable palm oil has been condemned for years by environmentalists and groups who see it as little more than a greenwashing scheme. This view did not improve the environmental community’s formation of the Roundtable (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) in 2004, but many believe that this widely accepted scheme has the potential to prevent deforestation.
The Roundtable is a not-for-profit organization that aims to unite interests in all sectors of the palm oil industry, including environmental and social NGOs. It is the main sustainable focus on palm oil today, however its standards do not prohibit deforestation or the destruction of peatlands for the development of palm plantations.
